Sexual violence
For my final major project, I am looking at the sexual violence that often goes unnoticed in the Orkney Islands.
I took inspiration from a previous project of mine where I used Barbie as a device for making a critical statement. During an interview with a stakeholder, they complimented my previous Barbie project and said that it was ‘powerful’. This inspired me to make another critical piece using Barbie. Again, stemming from conversations in all of my interviews, this was a critical piece particularly inspired by the stories of men taking girls into the middle of nowhere and pressuring them to perform sexual acts, threatening to leave them on the side of the road if they did not comply. The copy has been particularly altered to convey this story and how it is unexpected to the female passenger.
